Handling of Substituted Balls and Wrong Balls Under Rule 15

In this issue, we talk about how to handle substituted balls and wrong balls as this was raised by two members in a dispute they encountered in a recent competition. In accordance with Rule 15, unless otherwise permitted by one of the rules in the book, no ball in play can be substituted. If a ball has been badly damaged or broken, a substituted ball can be used without penalty. It a ball is unduly substituted, the player concerned will lose that hole in Match Play or incur a two stroke penalty in Stroke Play and must continue to use that ball until he holes out.

Regarding wrong ball, a player would lose the hole if he plays with a wrong ball in Match Play or incur a two stroke penalty in Stroke Play. Besides, he must continue to play on the spot from which the wrong ball was first played. If balls are inadvertently exchanged by players at unknown spot and it cannot be established where and when the exchange took place during the play of a hole, the two players should be given the benefit of the doubt and no penalty would be imposed, as per what are laid down in Rule 15-1/2.
